Evaluating Sources for Liquidation Product: 5 Questions to Ask

1) "Will the goods ship out of your warehouse or from the retailer’s warehouse?"

Merchandise that comes direct from a retailer or manufacturer, or their direct liquidation agent, is likely to be of higher quality.  This "first generation" product should have a manifest that lists all the items in the lot, along with the price.  If the goods ship out of a liquidator’s warehouse, it could be an indication that the product has been purchased and resold by multiple liquidators before you see it.  With "second- and third-generation" salvage, there is an increased likelihood that higher-value items have been removed or "cherry picked" from the lot.  It’s less likely that there will bea manifest attached to the lot as some resellers do not want you to know what is or isn’t in a load due to cherry picking.  Also, your purchase price may be higher since each successive reseller must "mark up" the price in order to make a profit.
